10 Red Flags in a Waterproofing Quote
Most waterproofing contractors are honest. But a few red flags in a waterproofing quote show up again and again in the estimates Akron homeowners show us. If you spot two or three in one quote, slow down.

The list
10 Red Flags to Watch For
1. No diagnosis The quote names a product but never says where the water is coming in.
2. One price, no breakdown No linear feet, no pump model, no description of concrete work or cleanup.
3. “Today only” pricing A big discount that disappears if you don’t sign before the salesperson leaves.
4. A full perimeter system for one leaking wall Sometimes needed, often not. Ask why the dry walls need treatment.
5. Scare language without measurements “Your wall is about to collapse” with no measurements of bowing or crack width.
6. No mention of downspouts or grading Outside water causes many Akron leaks. A quote that ignores it may be missing the cheapest fix.
7. Vague sump pump details No brand, size, check valve or discharge route. The pump is the part most likely to fail.
8. Discharge into the sewer In Akron, sump water shouldn’t go into the sanitary sewer. It should discharge to the yard or an approved storm line.
9. A warranty you can’t read before signing Or one that only stays valid if you buy yearly paid service.
10. A large deposit or cash only The Ohio Attorney General warns against big up-front payments and checks made out to a person instead of the company.

Questions That Clear Things Up
- “Show me where the water is coming in.”
- “What’s the cheapest fix that might work, and why isn’t it enough?”
- “What happens if this doesn’t solve it?”
- “Can I see the warranty now?”

Why it matters
What a Red-Flag Quote Can Cost You
A quote with several of these problems doesn’t only risk overpaying. It can mean:
- A system installed in the wrong place, while the real leak continues
- A pump that’s too small or discharges where it shouldn’t, causing new problems
- No recourse when something fails because the warranty didn’t cover it
- Paying for work that never gets finished after a big deposit
In Akron’s older homes, where water can come in through walls, cracks, the floor–wall joint or the floor drain, a clear diagnosis is the most valuable thing a quote can give you.
Common questions
Waterproofing Quotes: Common Questions
Is one red flag a deal-breaker?
Not always. Ask about it. A good contractor will happily fix a vague line or explain a choice.
What if the contractor won’t leave a written quote?
Don’t hire them. A written quote protects both sides.
How do I report a bad contractor in Ohio?
File a complaint with the Ohio Attorney General’s consumer protection section.
